The group has recently undertaken the following work:

  • advising on the set up of a local academy, including setting up and registering the charity as well as advising on building and construction issues, the funding agreements and the lease with the local council
  • acting for a school in a difficult and sensitive case before the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunals
  • assisting a higher education client to negotiate a high-value lease for one of its centres.  This work involved complex rent review provisions and lengthy negotiations taking into account the fact that the prospective tenant had occupied the property for years as an employee of our client
  • defending a long running equal pay claim filed against a client as part of a larger group action against a local council
  • advising on disciplinary and dismissal issues involving teachers, senior post-holders and support staff and having regard both to employment law principles and governance issues
  • providing detailed advice as to the legal and political implications of a client’s proposals to significantly reduce entitlement to enhanced maternity pay and sickness pay provisions
  • advising a school on the potential liability involved in permitting a pupil with a medical condition to participate in after-school activities.  The firm was closely involved in managing the relationship with the pupil’s parents as well as advising on the legal issues
  • advising a further education client on a number of legal issues arising from a proposal to outsource the provision of its courses
