Medical Evidence for an Adult Dependant Relative Visa

Medical Evidence for an Adult Dependant Relative Visa

An applicant for an Adult Dependant Relative visa must provide independent medical evidence that they require long term personal care, which they cannot get in their country of origin.

The Adult Dependant Relative (ADR) visa is available to adult dependant relatives of:

  • British citizens in the UK;
  • persons with settled status in the UK;
  • persons with limited leave to remain in the UK under Appendix EU; and
  • persons with refugee leave or humanitarian protection status,

who require long term personal care as a result of age, illness or disability. The dependant must also be unable to obtain the required level of care in the country they currently live in, even with the practical and financial help of their UK-based family member.

An applicant under the ADR visa must provide evidence that they require this long term personal care. This must be independent medical evidence that their physical or mental condition means that they cannot perform everyday tasks, provided by a doctor or other health professional.

Everyday tasks include washing, dressing and cooking. To ensure that they meet the high standards required of this visa, an applicant should obtain an expert medical report in support of their application.

The applicant must also show that they cannot obtain the required level of care in the country they are living in. This evidence should be provided by a central or local health authority, local authority, or a doctor or other health professional in the country in question.

At the same time, the applicant’s UK-based family member will need to prove that they have sufficient resources to maintain, accommodate and care for the dependant, without recourse to public funds.

Obtaining an ADR visa can be very difficult, as the applicant’s family member has to prove that they have adequate resources to support the applicant in the UK, while simultaneously explaining why they lack the resources to pay for their care overseas.
