In this article we highlight the introduction of space standards in permitted development.
The government has issued new regulations requiring that new dwellings must meet minimum space standards. Specifically, regulation 3 of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 (SI: 2020/1243), includes a new requirement for permitted development that all new dwellings must be at least 37 square metres in size or comply with nationally prescribed space standards issued by the Department for Communities and Local Government.
These new requirements come into force on 6 April 2021 and apply to any dwelling for which an application for prior approval is submitted on or after that date.
